From collection to analysis

Each day, ejaculates from 60–70 bulls are collected and immediately registered with a barcode, ensuring full traceability through every stage. The first step is homogenization, where semen is mixed for uniformity. Raw semen is diluted before analysis.

Flow cytometry technology is then used to measure sperm concentration and viability. This technology uses fluorescent dyes to distinguish live and dead cells, helping technicians calculate how much extender (dilutor) is needed to achieve the desired concentration for each dose.

Only samples that meet our strict quality thresholds move forward to production, while others may be reserved for sexed semen, which has even more stringent requirements.

Precise dilution and straw production

Once the semen passes initial quality checks, it is carefully diluted with precision. The semen is kept at a controlled temperature to maintain cell viability. Temperature fluctuations are avoided, as they can cause stress on the sperm.

After dilution, the semen is transferred into straws, with automated machines ensuring precise filling. Each straw is labeled with essential information, such as bull identity, breed, and lot number.

Quality control for sexed and conventional semen

Quality control standards differ for sexed and conventional semen. Sexed semen, with 2–4 million sperm cells per straw, must meet strict criteria: over 90% gender purity. Conventional semen contains 12 to 15 million cells per straw.

Both types undergo extensive testing, including microscopic evaluation and computer-assisted analysis, to ensure they meet the highest performance standards before they reach the market. This rigorous approach ensures that only the highest-performing semen is distributed globally.
